1. The fundamental of the practice of fasting six days during Syawwal based on the Prophet saying:
“He who fasts during Ramadan and he then he continue it with six days of fasting during Syawwal, it is like he is fasting all the time (year)” (Reported by Muslim, Ahmad, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, etc.).
2. Based on the above hadith is clear stated that fasting six days during the month of Syawwaal is highly recommended. Although al-Imam Malik ibn Anas (died 179H) said it is not highly encouraged (makruh) to consider fasting six days during the month of Syawwaal, but opinion was considered not strong. In al-Muwatta narrated by al-Imam Malik bin Anas mentioned:
“Malik thinks about fasting six days after the Eid Fitri, he never saw scholars and jurists fasting during that month. Not reach any of the scholars of the Salaf history about it. The fast is not recommended by the scholar. They worried about the heresy of the practice. The ignorant will associate it with Ramadan “. (al-Muwatta ‘, 1/330-bill: 857. Meaning, he stated that he did not see reason disapproved of scholars at Medina practiced and worried that fasting six days during the month of Syawwal this considered mandatory by the ignorant. The above hadith narrations that encourage fasting six days during Syawwal considered not strong due narrator Sa’d bin Sa’id bin Qais is considered as memorization problem then considered strong if he is alone (infirad) in history. In addition, al-Imam Malik measure it with practice by scholars of Medina in his time that he discovered he does not practice it.
3. But this hadith is considered as authentic by the majority of hadith scholars. Although Sa’ad bin Said bin Qais has some problems, but this hadith has other mutaba’ah (another narrator stripe) such as Sofwan bin Sulaiman and otherwise. So this hadith is authentic in terms of knowledge. When commenting on the statement by al-Imam Malik who see no scholar of his time practicing the fasting during Syawwal, al-Imam al-Nawawi (died 676H) said:
“When the Sunnah that has been convicted, then it is not abandoned just because it is not practiced by the majority, or even most or all people” (al-Nawawi, Syarh Sahih Muslim, 8/238, Beirut: Dar al-Khair).
The meaning of al-Imam al-Nawawi is we should not abandon a tradition of the Prophet’s only because other people do not practice it when it has been proven authentic history is on the side of the hadith scholars and no other authentic texts which can reject the practice. This should be the stand of the sunnah of the Prophet. The scholars in Medina at the time of al-Imam Malik bin Anas, who was still many scholars tabi’in and likely not be an argument for rejecting the practice of the Sunnah, what we today we reject a hadith just because Malaysian does not practice it, or scholars in Malaysia does not practice it? Certainly that will wipe away as the sunnah of the Prophet.
4. Based on this hadith then we can understand that those who do two things: first, to fast during Ramadan. Second, fasting six days of Syawwal. But the rewards as he fasted for a year. That is, if he is fasting Ramadan without Syawwal six days, he did not acquire this excellence. Similarly, if he is fasting six days of Syawwal without resolved fast of Ramadan, then he could not claim this prominence.
5. Based on the order of expression in this hadith, then the best person who has qada fast of Ramadan, should be complete qada (replacement) Ramadan first then followed by six days of Syawwal. If not the last opportunity to fast six qada after the first and, hopefully regular practice generally accepted by God because he was through on its second, not only based on order only.
6. There are differences among scholars; whether it is liquefiable fine fasting six days of Syawwal immediately after the feast day in a row, or any of the six days of Syawwal . Sects opinion Ahmad fulfilled either consecutive or not is the same. Hanafi and Shafi’i opinion: Fine to do it in a row after Eid Fitri (see: Sayyid Sabiq, Fiqh al-Sunnah 1/380, Beirut: Dar al-Fikr).
7. Although there is opinion saying that after consecutive Eid is fine due to the expression ”then he continue it”, but the virtues of fasting six are still available to anyone who is fasting six days in Syawwal though not in a row after a feast. Said al-Imam al-Nawawi:
“It is fine to do six days of fasting straight after the feast. If delayed until the end of the regular Syawwal gained prominence ‘followed six days’ as it follows six days in Syawwal “(Syarh Sahih Muslim, 8/238).
8. Permanent Fatwa committee Saudi Arabia in response to the question about fasting must contact the Syawwal six in a row after the feast or not, said:
“Not necessarily he continued fasting after Eid. Even need to start the day he or a few days after feast day. Whether he wants to fast continuous or fragmented in Syawwal. It is based on what is convenient for him. This thing wide (option) “. (Al-Fatawa al-Daimah committee li al-Buhuth al-‘Ilmiyyah, 10/391).
9. Since the days of fasting the six Syawwal is optional, while it might be difficult to fast during the family gathering, then it is better not to fasts on the day of the family or close friends dine. He may fast on other days remaining. Supererogatory fasting is encouraged, but keep your ties and feelings of the family is also important. This is in accordance with the sayings of the Prophet peace be upon him, from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri said:
“I have prepared food for Prophet so he and his friends came to my place. When serving food, a man among them said: “I am fasting”. Prophet remarked: “Brother you have invited you, and take the trouble to you.” Then he said to the man: “Break the fast, and replace it another day if desired” (Narrated by al-Bayhaqi in al-Sunan al-Kubra, ranked as hasan by al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Bari).
In another narration by al-Tabarani in al-Ausad he criticized the man and said: “Help your brother has invited you, and take the trouble to you then you say, ‘I am fasting!. Obviously, he did not encourage fast if there is to protect the feelings of your friends. So take care of the feelings of the family is more important.
10. There is no such thing as a Muslim in the ‘fast hariraya six’. There is also no specific religious feast day and fasting for six Syawwal like ‘hariraya tasbih prayer and fasting for six’ made in some places. This is all fabricated things that have not been done by the Prophet S.A.W and his companions. Prophet S.A.W. mentioned that:
“He who innovates things in our affairs (Islam) that is not of it will have it rejected.” (Narrated by Muslim).
If they want to do Tasbih prayer do not associated with fasting feast day six or so.
